Profile

Laura M. Gill is an associate at Edwards, Kenny & Bray LLP, joining EKB in 2009 after articling with the firm and completing a clerkship at the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 2007-2008.

Ms. Gill has experience in a broad range of commercial litigation matters. Her practice focuses primarily on aviation, employment, human rights, and general contractual disputes.

Ms. Gill has represented clients in the Supreme Court of British Columbia and the British Columbia Provincial Court. She has served as co-counsel in matters before the British Columbia Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court of Canada, and the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.
 

Representative Experience

Some of  Ms. Gill’s recent experience includes:

  • Defending aviation clients in cases involving product liability issues, wrongful death actions, and serious personal injury claims
  • Representing corporate clients on a variety of litigation matters, including shareholder disputes and general contractual disputes, and court approval of plans of arrangement in the Supreme Court of British Columbia
  • Acting as co-counsel for a corporation in a complex contractual dispute before the British Columbia Court of Appeal and in a leave to appeal application which was successfully opposed at the Supreme Court of Canada: Allnorth Consultants Limited v. Tercon Construction Ltd., 2010 BCCA 570
  • Acting as co-counsel for corporate and individual clients on commercial matters in the British Columbia Court of Appeal:  Blazek v. Blazek, 2010 BCCA 188 and Fisher v. Fisher, 2009 BCCA 567
  • Defending employers against wrongful dismissal claims in the Supreme Court of British Columbia and human rights claims in the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal, including acting as co-counsel for an employer accused of discrimination on the basis of physical disability: St. Louis v. Hallcon Corporation, 2010 BCHRT 309
  • Representing an employee in a wrongful dismissal trial before the British Columbia Provincial Court, and successfully obtaining damages and costs in the amount of $30,208.25: Mary Veito v. Auld Phillips Ltd. (July 7, 2010, unreported)
  • Acting as co-counsel on behalf of an intervener in a lawsuit involving the federal environmental assessment process: Mining Watch Canada v. Canada (Fisheries and Oceans), 2010 SCC 2


Professional and Community Activities

Ms. Gill is a member of the Air Law, Civil Litigation, Employment Law, and Human Rights Law sections of the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch). Prior to articling with Edwards, Kenny & Bray LLP, Ms. Gill served as a Law Clerk at the British Columbia Supreme Court, performing legal research for judges.

Ms. Gill serves as a mentor for the Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia Mentoring Connections program.
