Stephen D. Gill* is a senior litigator at Edwards, Kenny & Bray LLP.

A highly respected Vancouver commercial litigation lawyer with over 40 years’ experience, Mr. Gill’s practice focuses on aviation law and insurance, products liability, employment, corporate/commercial, securities, construction and alternate dispute resolution.

He has litigated many complex cases, and has represented clients in all levels of Courts, including the British Columbia Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. Mr. Gill has also represented clients as counsel in other jurisdictions throughout Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Certified as a Chartered Arbitrator by the Arbitration & Mediation Institute of Canada, and Panel Member of the BC International Commercial Arbitration Centre, Mr. Gill also specializes in alternate dispute resolution, where he acts as sole arbitrator and chairman of three-member panels, and as counsel in arbitrations and mediations. Mr. Gill has conducted arbitrations in the areas of securities, insurance (liability and coverage), corporate/commercial, and personal injury. He also Chairs disciplinary panels of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) and the Mutual Fund Dealers Association of Canada. He is also on the roster of arbitrators for the Portfolio Management Association of Canada. Mr. Gill is a personal law corporation*.

  • Defence of an aviation insurance client in a case which went to the Supreme Court of Canada and is a leading case in aviation insurance law in Canada: Coronation Insurance Co. v. Taku Air Transport
  • Defence of aviation clients in wrongful death actions and serious injuries, including brain injuries
  • Defence of aviation clients in product liability cases
  • Representation of a general contractor in a complex construction, builders’ lien case
  • Arbitrator in Investment Dealers Association-mandated arbitrations between clients and investment firms
  • Arbitrator in securities and corporate disputes
  • Representation of corporate clients in cases involving wrongful dismissal, and harassment; breach of fiduciary duties; breach of corporate opportunities; and breach of contract
  • Defence of aviation insurers in British Columbia and Alberta involving a product liability/personal injury claim
  • Opinions on coverage issues for insurance clients
  • Chaired securities disciplinary panels on extended hearings involving complex deceptive trading issues

Professional & Community Services

Mr. Gill’s distinguished professional career includes serving as law clerk to Justice Emmett Hall in the Supreme Court of Canada and as an adjunct professor on trial and appellate practice at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Law. He is listed as a “Leading Practitioner” for aviation insurance in the Canadian LEXPERT directory.
