Robert G. Ward is a Queen's Counsel and senior litigation associate counsel at Edwards, Kenny & Bray LLP.

Mr. Ward’s Vancouver commercial litigation practice emphasizes corporate and commercial disputes, products liability and aviation law, insurance matters, construction law and employment law. He has represented multi-national Canadian and U.S. corporations on various commercial litigation matters, particularly related to product liability. He has also coordinated and instructed counsel representing multi-national corporations in other jurisdictions.

Mr. Ward has extensive experience as counsel before administration tribunals, the trial and appellate courts of British Columbia and Alberta, and the Supreme Court of Canada. An effective negotiator, he is also experienced in alternative dispute resolution, having acted as mediator, arbitrator and counsel in various arbitrations and mediations.

Representative Experience

  • Counsel for the Dow Chemical Company on various matters, including the British Columbia breast implant class action in which he successfully argued that the case should not be certified as against the Dow Chemical Company

  • Counsel for the Dow Chemical Company (and Dow Agrosciences LLC) regarding claims of damage for personal injury from various products ranging from insecticides to carpet coatings

  • Counsel for the Flintkote Group of companies in mass conspiracy and personal injury claims in the asbestos industry

  • Counsel for Textron, Inc. relating to personal injury claims arising from allegedly defective products

  • Counsel to aviation insurance companies in personal injury and property damage (including hull loss) claims arising from allegedly defective products and/or engineering and maintenance services

  • Counsel for various construction and building supply companies defending and pursuing claims arising from allegedly defective engineering, construction and/or building products

  • Counsel for Placer Dome Inc. in the defence of claims in the Philippines arising from the allegedly negligent design and construction of a dam and alleged mismanagement of tailings disposal


    Professional & Community Activities

    Mr. Ward is a well-regarded speaker and has lectured at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Law, the Professional Legal Training Courts, the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia, the Canadian Institute, the Alternative Dispute Resolution section of the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch), the Aviation section of the American Bar Association, and other organizations.

    Mr. Ward also served as counsel to the Labour, Justice and Intergovernmental Relations Committee of the Provincial Government, advising on proposed reform of the Builders’ Lien Act and other legislation.

    Mr. Ward is also a member of the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch), Vancouver Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, and Canadian Defence Lawyers.
