COVID-19 Update: Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy

On March 30, 2020, the Federal Government provided details regarding the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy program (“CEWS”) for employers impacted by COVID-19.

On April 8, 2020, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that CEWS will have more relaxed standards than previously shared. These relaxed standards include:

  • An employer must show a 15 percent decline in its revenue as opposed to 30 percent.
  • An employer can compare its revenue loss of March, April or May 2020 to that of the same month in 2019, or to an average of their revenue earned in January and February 2020.
  • Charities and non-profit organizations can elect whether to include or exclude revenues from government assistance in their calculations.
