Peter J. Brown is a regulatory and business lawyer. He provides advice on a wide range of transactional and day-to-day business activities for commercial clients and financial institutions. Peter often acts in the role of General Corporate Counsel for his clients, providing legal and strategic advice to help them succeed in accomplishing their business and organizational goals.

In particular, Peter has extensive experience in working with credit unions, including the following:

Peter is a Partner at EKB and has been with the firm since 1996, when he first started as an articled student at EKB. He acted as managing partner of the firm between 2013 and 2016.

  • Lead counsel for approximately 25 credit union mergers over the years
  • Has acted for almost all of the credit unions in the B.C. credit union system and acts as General Corporate Counsel for several credit unions on an ongoing basis, including Stabilization Central Credit Union of British Columbia
  • Assists with the review and revision of three to four sets of Rules/Bylaws for credit unions each year
  • Represented 34 B.C. credit unions and over 40 Ontario credit unions for a credit card supplier contract
  • Represented five credit unions from B.C., Manitoba and Ontario, on a joint retainer basis, in connection with the negotiation of digital banking contracts
  • Legal advisor for numerous CUSOs and other credit union collaborations
  • Borrower’s counsel on the negotiation and completion of a US$100 million foreign bank deposit transaction for a credit union
  • Borrower’s counsel for credit unions in connection with financings from CIBC, Desjardins and other similar lenders
  • Assisted with the negotiation of multiple banking system contracts with Canadian and U.S. banking system suppliers
